Notes from the meaning of love in human experiences

it cannot be maintained that religion leads humanity to a higher ethical place in which love replaces hatred.

the baby/child/adolescent who is loved learns to love while the one who is hated or misused learns to hate and misuse.
in romantic love, even though the lovers sometimes experience the heights of human bliss, more often terrible suffering is involved. it is rare for romance to last indefinitely, let alone a lifetime.
in parental love, the complexities of the child's development are so great that relatively few parents are able to cope with them. psychology has clarified many of the problems but parents will more often stick to the way in which they were brought up.
In filial love, ideally such love could produce great happiness. But again it is rarely seen. More often there is the expression of defiance or submission, neither of which suffices to lay the basis for a good life.
there is the most pathological of it all, the lack of love. in the extreme this produces the markedly detached individual who may or may not be overtly schizophrenic and whose love disappointments are so great that it is extraordinarily difficult to induce him or her to try again.
